We match members of the public who need free legal help with barristers who are willing to donate their time and expertise in deserving cases for those who are unable to obtain legal aid and cannot afford to pay.
Advocate is the Bar’s national pro bono charity that makes it possible for barristers to balance a dedicated practice with making a significant contribution to the community.
“The judiciary recognises the critical contribution that the Bar makes to access to justice through its pro bono work. It is a huge credit to practitioners that they are willing to give up their time for free to help the most vulnerable members of society.”
- The Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, The Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill
Advocate is an independent charity that relies on donations to meet all its running costs.

With the 2025 Bar Pro Bono Awards just one month away, Advocate is delighted to announce the eagerly anticipated shortlist. Held annually, the Bar Pro Bono Awards are a unique opportunity in the legal calendar to celebrate the remarkable pro bono achievements of the Bar in England and Wales.
Today, 617 barristers across England & Wales were celebrated on the second ever Pro Bono Recognition List endorsed by the Lady Chief Justice. Advocate are delighted to see a 30% increase in submissions from the Bar since last year.
Every year, barristers have the opportunity to donate to Advocate when renewing their practising certificates. The donations received through this process make up nearly 50% of our charity's annual funding. If you can, please donate to Advocate when renewing your practising certificate this year to allow us to continue providing life-changing pro bono support.
