Pro Bono Pledge

Can you pledge 25 hours of pro bono work in 2023? Sign up here today!

Please make the Pro Bono Pledge your New Year’s Resolution in 2023. You hold the key: without your pledge of the hours you can manage, people in real need will go without the help the law can bring or the defence the law provides.

The Hon. Mr. Justice Robin Knowles CBE

How it works

  • Pledge 25 hours of pro bono in 2023, by registering here

  • Pro bono can be undertaken through all pro bono schemes, law centres or other organisations, not just Advocate. Reviewing and case-based mentoring with Advocate can also be counted

  • Keep track of your own hours, as soon as you reach 25 hours or more, let us know by completing this short form

  • We will send you the Pro Bono Pledge logo that can be included in your email signature and on your Chambers profile

  • Advocate will share that you have completed the #ProBonoPledge on LinkedIn and Twitter, with your permission

When I began in the profession legal aid was almost universal, but with the limitations imposed on eligibility over more than three decades sadly the need for pro bono help grows every year. It was legally aided cases that taught me my skills and I passionately believe that I should pay that back by providing pro bono assistance every year.
I would encourage everyone in the profession to participate!

Jim Sturman KC, Joint Head of Chambers, 2 Bedford Row

Pro Bono Pledge, for Pupils!

Are you looking to get your career off to the best start? Take part in the Pupil Pledge!

Building pro bono work into your practice could advance your skills, allow you to work on more challenging cases, and build your advocacy experience.

From your second six onwards, you can take on cases with Advocate, and also receive mentoring from senior barristers on these cases. Find out more about our mentoring scheme, Collaborate.

What is the Pupil Pledge?

Stand out amongst your peers by taking part in the Pupil Pledge. After completing your first piece of pro bono work, we will send you a Pupil Pledge logo for your email signature or Chambers website and celebrate your achievement on Twitter and LinkedIn.

Sign up here if you are planning on taking part!

"Pro bono help is the last resort for people who need but cannot access legal representation. It was through volunteering that the individual I represented facing deportation, whose mental health had rapidly deteriorated in immigration detention, was identified as a potential victim of trafficking and granted bail. Even just a few hours of pro bono assistance can truly change the course of someone's life. "

Annahita Moradi-Balf, Young Pro Bono Barrister of the Year, One Pump Court

How it works:

  • Pledge one piece of pro bono during your second six, by registering here

  • Upon completing one piece of pro bono, fill in this form

  • We will send you the Pupil Pledge logo that can be included in your email signature and on your Chambers profile

“As a barrister two years into my tenancy, I have made pro bono work a central part of my practice. Through pro bono work, I have had the chance to develop my legal skills and knowledge in a practical setting, while also making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. The impact of pro bono work goes beyond just the individuals being helped. By providing access to justice to those who might not otherwise have it, we are helping to build a more equitable and just society for all.”

Aaqib Javed, Chair of Young Barristers Advocate, Spire Barristers
