Great Western Air Ambulance Charity is called to over 2,000 patients a year who need our help due to serious illness or injury. We train around 10,000 people in CPR each year. We place dozens of publicly accessible defibrillators with the help of local communities. We provide training for land ambulance crew, and train the next generation of Critical Care Doctors and Paramedics. We're involved in clinical research and share our experiences worldwide. We support dozens of former patients and bereaved families who are coming to terms with what has happened. But we could do even more. Join us, and help us be there for everyone.
Whilst many of the issues that face the charity are common to many organisations, such as balancing income and expenditure and dealing with people, the specialist nature of what our operational team do, the breadth of our fundraising activity and the constant evolution of the charity means there is always something fresh and interesting going on. So, being a Trustee of GWAAC is incredibly interesting and rewarding.
However, our Board is focused on governance - whilst Trustees are ultimately responsible for the charity they do not run the organisation, as this is done by a professional management team. The Board currently meets quarterly, but Trustees are asked to act as ambassadors for GWAAC, opening doors, networking and offering support where practical and relevant, to help us achieve our ambitions.
Our Trustees will have the time needed to carry out the role, be willing to challenge, ask difficult questions and to learn from others. We want Trustees who are dedicated to our cause, curious about how we can do better, compassionate towards our people and collaborative in their approach. They will help us develop and maintain a culture of high performance but which is genuinely inclusive.
We recently conducted a skills audit of our Board and identified the need to complement our existing Board members by recruiting Trustees with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- HR including equality, diversity and inclusion
- Planning, construction, health and safety and facilities management
-Fundraising
-Helicopter aviation
-Health and policy systems
Time commitment: One hour a week on average, including quarterly board meetings on weekday afternoons
Attendance: In person board meetings, with other work conducted remotely.
