Opportunity Green is a fast-growing not-for-profit organisation that helps to identify and unlock opportunities to tackle climate change. We build ambitious coalitions, support climate vulnerable countries in international negotiations and find innovative legal pathways to fight climate change.
We are seeking a trustee with legal, and particularly strategic litigation experience to:
· Support the board in understanding and governing a charity that uses law as a tool for systemic change.
· Help assess the merits, risks and impacts of high-profile legal interventions.
· Oversee risk mitigation strategies to safeguard the charity’s assets and reputation during any legal action.
· Act as a critical friend to OG, providing independent perspective and challenge.
In addition, all Trustees support OG to:
• Carry out our purposes for the public benefit
• Comply with our Constitution and the law
• Act in OG’s overall best interest
• Manage our resources responsibly
• Act with reasonable care and skill
• Ensure we are accountable – to staff, trustees, the public and the Charity Commission.
We are looking for a Trustee who:
• Has experience as a qualified barrister, solicitor or legal academic (UK or EU preferred), preferably with strategic litigation experience, and a passion for using their skills to tackle climate change and to further OG’s mission
• Is able to think strategically and help others think through decisions, sometimes being a critical friend Has the ability to assess legal risk and provide clear, balanced advice to non-lawyers
• Is willing to advocate for and promote OG’s work, connecting us with networks and contacts where needed
• Can commit to serve 3 years’ appointment, with possible extension
While knowledge of charities and how they work is desirable, you do not need to know everything about our work or the sector. We are looking for people who can think critically to ensure that OG is the best it can be.
Attendance: Remote, with in person attendance once a year if possible
Time Commitment: 4 meetings a year plus ad hoc support
