The Innocence Project London (IPL) is a UK registered charity dedicated to investigating potential miscarriages of justice. For many prisoners, IPL represents a last hope. The Innocence Project London are seeking a committed Trustee to provide strategic oversight and ensure integrity and compliance. Experience in law, governance, communications, public affairs, criminal justice or risk is valued. Help us investigate miscarriages of justice and respond to prisoners who turn to us.

Role Details 

The Trustee plays a strategic governance role within the Innocence Project London (IPL), providing oversight to ensure the charity operates with integrity, accountability, and compliance. As a registered UK charity investigating potential miscarriages of justice, IPL represents a last hope for many prisoners. The Board’s role is to safeguard this mission and ensure the organisation remains effective, sustainable, and ethically led.

 We are looking for someone willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board.

 Skills & Attributes

·       Experience serving as a charity trustee or as a member of a non-executive board is desirable.

·       An understanding of the roles and responsibilities of trustees within a UK charity.

·       The ability to contribute thoughtfully to Board discussions and support collective decision-making.

·       Experience in leadership, professional, or community roles that bring valuable perspective to the Board’s work.

·       Good judgement, integrity, and a commitment to acting in the best interests of the charity and its beneficiaries.

Deliverables and Expectations

Trustees are expected to:

  • Attend and contribute to scheduled Board meetings.
  • Provide strategic input into organisational planning and review.
  • Offer relevant expertise (e.g., in law, governance, communications, public affairs, criminal justice, or risk and compliance) to strengthen decision-making.
  • Support the charity’s sustainability through advocacy and responsible networking.

The role is voluntary and non-executive; Trustees do not manage day-to-day operations. Instead, they provide governance, support, and challenge at a strategic level.

Organisational Structure

IPL is led operationally by a Director. The Board of Trustees provides governance oversight and works in partnership with the Director to enable the organisation’s work. Students and pro bono legal teams carry out investigations into potential miscarriages of justice, supported by the Director. The Trustee joins a skilled and collaborative team committed to ensuring high-quality work and responsible stewardship of the charity.

Overall, the Trustee role is an opportunity to contribute strategic leadership within a mission-driven organisation dedicated to justice and accountability.

Time commitment: 1-3 hours a week and flexible, but the attendance at monthly evening board meetings in London and the annual strategy day are essential.
