Organisation Overview

Childnet is a UK-based charity dedicated to making the internet a safe and positive place for all children and young people. Since launching in 1995, Childnet has delivered over 30 years of impact through free innovative resources, a national Film Competition, school education visits, and coordination of Safer Internet Day in the UK.
By speaking to thousands of young people each year, Childnet remains at the forefront of emerging tech trends and online safety issues.
The charity works collaboratively with the Internet Watch Foundation and SWGfL as part of the UK Safer Internet Centre and founded the UK Online Harms Early Warning Working Group to ensure rapid awareness and response to emerging online risks.

Role Details

Childnet is seeking at least two new Trustees to join its Board. Trustees play a key leadership role, guiding how the charity is run and acting as strategic advisors to the CEO and senior leadership team.
They help the organisation diversify income streams, increase reach, strengthen transparency and governance, and ensure Childnet’s messaging remains impactful and relevant.

Skills and experience sought:
Legal expertise (desired but not essential):

  • Strong legal background across relevant legal fields.
  • Ability to provide clear, practical legal advice to support Board decisions.
  • Ability to support strong governance and ensure work is carried out transparently and in the public interest.

General trustee qualities:

  • Commitment to Childnet’s mission, values, and youth empowerment.
  • Strategic vision, independent judgement, and confidence to contribute openly.
  • Willingness to understand trustee responsibilities (full training provided).

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 4–6 Board meetings per year, each lasting 2 hours.
  • Plus ad‑hoc strategic advice and committee involvement, estimated at 1 day per month.

Attendance Type

  • In‑person: Four 2‑hour meetings per year (aim).
  • Remote: Ad‑hoc advice and committee work, estimated at one day per month.
