Defending compassion in a landmark puppy rescue case: Steven’s* story

When Steven first approached Advocate for help, he was facing charges of burglary for rescuing 18 beagle puppies, who were living in a facility used for breeding and animal testing. Panel member Samuel March of 9KBW assisted Steven with several hearings and after a 7-day long trial, Steven was eventually found not guilty by a jury. Steven was incredibly grateful to Samuel for all his help in giving him a voice in court on this important animal welfare issue.

When Bryan came to Advocate, he was facing every parent’s worst nightmare. A final court order had stripped him of his parental responsibility, changed his child’s surname without his consent, and restricted him to indirect contact only. He was desperate not to lose his relationship with his child. Alone, and without the means to challenge the decision, Bryan turned to Advocate for help.

Challenging a rogue landlord: Leanne’s story

Leanne lived for over two years without hot water in a property that was unfit for habitation. Despite repeated complaints, her landlord refused to fix the boiler, and even attempted to unlawfully enter the property while she was inside. After facing rent arrears, much distress and a job loss, Leanne sought legal support through Advocate, where our volunteer barristers stepped up to help.

Lawyers team up to provide pro bono support in tragic inquest case

Karen approached Advocate for help on behalf of her partner, Sarah, whose son took his own life. Barristers Sunyana Sharma of 3PB and Markus Findlay of Doughty Street Chambers volunteered to assist at the inquest, with the support of a team of solicitors from Arnold & Porter.

Barristers Michael Jones KC of Deans Court Chambers and Matthew Carey of St John’s Buildings appeared pro bono in the Court of Appeal in a case concerning a grandmother’s wish to be allowed to look after three of her young grandchildren.

Helping a full-time carer in a tax dispute: John’s Story

John, a full-time carer for his dad who has dementia, was struggling with a tax dispute with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) for almost five years. With the assistance of Keith Gordon and Siobhan Duncan of Temple Tax Chambers, John was prevented from losing his home, and a significant pro bono costs order was secured.
