Connect: North Korea works with North Korean escapees to help them recover, rebuild, and succeed. Established in 2018, CNK addresses the complex challenges North Koreans face in building new lives after escaping the North Korean regime and reaching safety. The organisation supports people to access the practical, emotional, and community support needed to thrive in the UK.
Role Details
Connect: North Korea is seeking a Legal Trustee to join our Board at an exciting stage of growth, as we scale our programmes and deepen our impact in the UK and internationally.
The volunteer will join our Board of Trustees, contributing to good governance and strategic decision-making, and providing legal insight on regulatory compliance and risk.
They will help ensure CNK meets its legal obligations, support the Board in maintaining high standards of governance and accountability, and act as an ambassador for the charity, using their networks to build relationships with donors, partners, and advocates.
Skills and Experience:
Essential:
· Demonstrable experience in a legal role (e.g. solicitor, barrister, in-house counsel)
· Understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to charities
· Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, and comfortable in an ambassadorial role
· Good communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to foster a collaborative team environment
· Able to make difficult, evidence-based decisions, negotiate challenging conversations, and balance competing interests
· Experience working or volunteering in diverse, cross-cultural environments
Desirable:
· Experience of charity law, regulatory compliance, or governance
· Lived experience of migration or a refugee background
· Korean language skills
· Active engagement in refugee and migrant rights, social change, or a related field
Attendance:
Hybrid
Time Commitment:
The role involves attending quarterly board meetings (2 hours each), an annual away day, and providing ad hoc support between meetings, for a commitment of around 2–3 hours per month. The initial term is three years, with potential for renewal.
