As the new legal term begins, some barristers may be considering applying for future rounds of the KC competition. Advocate are delighted to have produced a new guide that explains how pro bono work can assist when applying for silk.
The guide sets out how taking on pro bono work can be useful for directly demonstrating the competencies that are assessed in KC applications.
Some examples may include:
Taking on pro bono cases in an area beyond your usual area of practice and demonstrating your ability to become “familiar with new areas of law quickly and reliably” (Competency A).
Mentoring juniors who are taking on challenging pro bono cases, demonstrating an ability to form “productive working relationships” (Competency C).
The competencies that are required for KC appointments are available to read here.
Commenting on the publication of the launch, Advocate’s Vice Chair Sarah Abram KC said:
“I’m delighted to see the publication of Advocate’s Guide for KC Applications, explaining how pro bono work can assist when applying for silk. I wish it had been available when I was applying for silk! I used several examples of pro bono work on my application form, and it’s great to see this structured explanation of how pro bono work can provide useful evidence in support of each competency.”
We hope this guide can be a helpful starting point for barristers who are thinking of applying for Silk in the future. If you have any queries, please get in touch.
