Team Advocate celebrating their victory by exploring Paris!

It was an extraordinary adventure, though a tough test of my lack of fitness. The cycle through southern England to Newhaven on the first day was lovely, as was the ride from Dieppe into the heart of Normandy.

The last day, into Paris, was very tough thanks to a full-scale gale in our faces. But it was all worthwhile. The feeling of achievement when we arrived at the Eiffel Tower at the end of the 186 miles, and of having raised so much money for Advocate, was amazing

Our work helps people like Joe*, a survivor of torture in Ethiopia, who was assaulted when protecting his friend from a mugging. He suffered from serious physical and psychiatric injuries, which left him unable to work and struggling with day to day life. He was offered a total of £2,600 in Criminal Injuries Compensation.

Joe’s case was matched with two barristers to assist him in his fight for fair compensation. They helped him with his case for four long years, on a pro bono basis. Their committed support meant he was finally awarded over £300,000 from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority – enough to make an incredible difference to his life:

I appreciate everything you do for me. Beyond legal advice, the care as a human being. And working tirelessly to ensure that I was given a fair decision.

It was a long and upsetting process and I couldn’t have ever thought anyone would stay by my side for this long but you did stand by my side without giving up on me.

Fundraising opportunities like the Legal Wheel Appeal mean that we are able to help as many people as possible like we did Joe, making a better future a reality.

Anyone can help us on this mission, you don’t have to be a barrister to sign up. All you need is a smile, determination and the desire to make a difference!
