Organisation Overview

The Innocence Project London is a charity, which works pro bono on behalf of convicted individuals who have exhausted the criminal appeals process and are maintaining their innocence, to make application to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC). We do not provide legal advice. Students working alongside academics and lawyers, deconstruct claims of innocence to identify a new legal argument or fresh evidence, which are the requirements for the CCRC.

Role Details

Time commitment: 4-6 hours per month.

Attendance: In person or remote.

Role Description

Lawyers work alongside students to deconstruct innocence claims, identifying case theories and areas for investigation. Lawyers can get as involved as they want to with a case- some get involved in reading documents and analysing areas for investigation others simple support the students in their case theory generating areas for discussion.

Required Skills and Experience

The IPL does not provide legal advice, applications to the CCRC are done so by the consent of the client. Being able to give practice effect to theories is useful but lawyers do not have to practice in criminal law to work with the IPL.
