Legal Trustee

Deadline: 2 Jun 2025
Online

Organisation overview:

DataKind UK is a small charity with a vision for a strong, thriving third sector that embraces data use to become more impactful. We connect third sector organisations with data professionals to improve their decision making, problem solving, and working practices, by applying data science approaches to sector-wide challenges.

Role Details:

The minimum time commitment for any trustee is roughly four hours a month, including attending meetings and reading relevant papers. Trustees are expected to attend all board meetings, which are held four times a year during office hours (10am to 6pm) and usually last two hours. Papers are distributed approximately one week before meetings.

You may also be asked to join a subcommittee to support with priority areas, such as finance or strategy, or a group for discrete projects, as the need arises. Commitments will be virtual, with no necessity to live near or travel to our offices in London. On occasions where we prefer in-person attendance, trustees can claim out-of-pocket expenses incurred in travelling to meetings.

We’re also keen that trustees proactively use their skills, experience, and networks to support the charity's mission and goals. You might advocate for us at a conference, introduce us to a key fundraising opportunity, or support staff wellbeing and development.

Please apply via Charity Job - https://www.charityjob.co.uk/volunteer-jobs/datakind-uk/trustees-trustee-treasurer-and-trustee-chair/1016038?tsId=36  - by sending a 1-2 page cover letter outlining what you would bring to the role based on the skills outlined in the candidate pack, especially highlighting if you are interested in the Chair or Treasurer role, along with your CV, by Monday 2 June.

Time Commitment:

4 hours per month including quarterly meetings.

Attendance:

Remotely

Required Skills & Experience:

We’re looking for enthusiastic and supportive individuals to fuel our mission and direction by providing oversight of our operations, supporting with major decision-making, and advocating for our work and cause.

DataKind UK promotes equity, diversity, and inclusion, and we strive to create an environment where our staff, volunteers, partners, and beneficiaries can be themselves and achieve their full potential. We particularly welcome applications from black, Asian, and minority ethnic candidates, LGBTQ+ candidates and candidates with disabilities, as we would like to increase the representation of these groups in our community. We use the Charity Job platform to anonymise candidates in order to make recruitment decisions based only on the quality of the application.

We want to appoint a minimum of four new trustees this year, including a new Chair and Treasurer, to help expand the skills and capacity of our board. You’ll join an existing team with diverse interests, so to complement this, we are particularly interested in hearing from candidates who have a background in, or working knowledge of:

  • Legal expertise, such as charity law and regulation, company law and regulation, or health, safety & wellbeing.
  • Financial management and accounting, or managing investments.
  • Volunteer management.
  • Cybersecurity or data protection
  • PR and media relations.
