CIMSPA is the professional development body for the UK’s sport and physical activity sector and a registered charity, committed to supporting, developing and enabling professionals and organisations to succeed and, as a result, inspire our nation to become more active.

Together we’re developing a vibrant, UK-wide sport and physical activity sector, with the highest standards of service delivery.

Role Details:

This is a crucial and exciting time for CIMSPA as we continue to build our profile as the professional body for the sport and physical activity sector.  We are looking to appoint individuals to join our Board of Trustees who bring with them energy and commitment, and who are passionate about the sport and physical activity sector and the benefits it can bring to the UK.   

We are looking for trustees who can provide a clear visionary and strategic overview of the landscape which CIMSPA sits within, and who have a passion for working for the benefit of the public.  You will need to be inspired by CIMSPA’s vision of being a recognised and respected sport and physical activity sector that everyone wants to be part of.  

Board trustees work in partnership with the CEO, Chair of the Board, other trustees, committee members and the senior leadership team. They ensure CIMSPA pursues its objectives, as defined in its Charter and Statutes, whilst remaining compliant with charity law, company law and other relevant regulations. 

The role of a board trustee is to: 

  • Ensure that CIMSPA is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit and for the benefit of its members. 
  • Ensure that CIMSPA complies with its Charter and Statutes, charity law, company law and all other relevant legislation/regulations. 
  • Act in CIMSPA’s best interests. 
  • Manage CIMSPA’s resources responsibly and honestly, with a duty of prudence.  
  • Act with reasonable care and skill. 
  • Ensure that CIMSPA is accountable. 
  • Work in partnership with the CEO and senior leadership team to ensure the strategic aims of the organisation are achieved, maintaining a management and oversight role. 
  • Participate in achieving well-rounded and carefully considered strategic decision-making. 

Lead by example in demonstrating the values and behaviours of the institute, acting at all times in line with the Board of Trustee’s Code of Conduct and, if a member of CIMSPA, the CIMSPA Member Code of Conduct. 

Time Commitment:  

5 board meetings per year plus preparation. Attendance at our AGM and committee meetings as appropriate.

Board meeting are a mix of virtual and in-person

Required Skills & Experience:

Based on the Board’s annual skills review, we have identified Legal and Regulatory expertise as a priority for recruitment: 

CIMSPA is in the unique position of being registered with the Privy Council, the Charity Commission and Companies House.  We are also listed as the sole regulator for the sport and physical activity sector on the Government’s Regulated Professions Register.  We are therefore seeking a trustee with in-depth knowledge and experience of the legal and regulatory frameworks which we operate in.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring the proper administration of CIMSPA. 
  • Participating in governance matters and ensuring compliance with key policies. 
  • Reporting and managing their personal or related party interests, ensuring they act in the best interests of CIMSPA at all times. 
  • Safeguarding and protecting CIMSPA at all times. 
  • Formulating and reviewing CIMSPA’s strategic plans and regularly reviewing the long-term strategic aims of CIMSPA, ensuring goals and targets are defined, and evaluating performance against agreed targets. 
  • Reviewing and approving appropriate organisational policies. 
  • Engaging in and facilitating an equitable, inclusive, and effective environment for board and committee meetings that promotes a culture of openness and debate. 
  • Developing and maintaining successful working relationships with other trustees, the Chair, the CEO and other CIMSPA staff. 
  • Participating honestly in self-reflective evaluations of the effectiveness of the board and their own contribution. 
  • Engaging in continuing professional development to support identified skill requirements of the Board. 
  • Being a member or Chair of sub-committees or working groups when required. 
  • Acting as or undertaking specific roles, where required by the Board of Trustees e.g. Treasurer, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Champion, Youth Panel mentor.  
  • Demonstrating a clear, ongoing commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and to safeguarding and welfare. 
  • Representing CIMSPA as a champion, spokesperson and professional advocate, at appropriate events, meetings or functions. 
  • Fostering relations with key stakeholders, potential clients and potential funders/donors. 

Acting with honesty, transparency and integrity in all undertakings with and on behalf of CIMSPA.
