Trustee

Deadline: 4 Aug 2025
Hybrid

Organisation Overview

Classics for All is a national charity working to level the playing field in education. We believe that every young person - regardless of their background or postcode - should have the opportunity to study Latin, Ancient Greek, ancient history and classical civilisation.

Since 2010, we’ve supported over 1,300 state schools and reached more than 185,000 pupils, many in areas of high deprivation. Our work is rooted in the belief that access to classical subjects can raise aspirations, improve literacy, and open doors to further learning and opportunity.

Role Details:

We are now seeking new Trustees to join our Board and help us deepen our impact and extend our reach. As we grow, we are focused on embedding social mobility and educational equity at the heart of our strategy.

Your contribution will help us reach more schools in underserved areas, train more teachers, and inspire more young people - particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds - with the richness and relevance of the ancient world.

You will be part of a Board that is shaping the future of a growing charity, ensuring that classical subjects are no longer the preserve of the privileged, but a powerful tool for inclusion, aspiration, and opportunity.

This is a meaningful opportunity to use your skills and insight to support a cause that changes lives - by opening up access to knowledge, culture, and confidence that can last a lifetime.

This is a general trustee role. All Trustees contribute to strategic planning, support the executive team, and act as ambassadors for our mission. We are committed to building a Board that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.

Board meetings are held quarterly (mostly online, with one in-person meeting per year), and we host an annual away day. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and will provide support to those new to governance roles.

If you believe in the power of education to transform lives and want to help make classical subjects accessible to all, we’d love to hear from you.

Time commitment: 4-5 hours per month

Attendance:  Hybrid (mostly online, one in person meeting per year)

Role Description

We are looking for individuals who share our commitment to educational equity and social mobility, and who are excited to help shape the future of Classics for All as we grow our reach and deepen our impact.

You do not need to have studied Classics or have previous board experience to apply. We are keen to hear from people with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences - especially those who reflect the diversity of the communities we aim to serve.

We are particularly interested in candidates who bring one or more of the following:

Lived experience of the barriers faced by young people in accessing high-quality education

Professional experience in one or more of the following areas:

            Legal

            Digital transformation

Marketing and Communications, PR or brand development

Strategic thinking and the ability to contribute to long-term planning and decision-making

A collaborative mindset, with a willingness to support and challenge constructively

A commitment to inclusion, and to helping us build a board that is representative of the communities we serve

We are also open to applications from first-time trustees. If you are new to governance but bring relevant skills, insight or lived experience, we will provide support and induction to help you thrive in the role.

We particularly welcome applications from:

People based outside London and the South East

People from Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic backgrounds

Disabled people and those with long-term health conditions

            People from lower socio-economic backgrounds
