Working across the UK, Young Citizens deliver learning experiences that light the spark of active citizenship from an early age. Established in 1989 by Lord Phillips OBE and a group of democracy education experts, we specialise in civic literacy and linking political, media, economic and legal education to real-world contexts for 5-18 year olds through interactive learning programmes. Our charity helped define the UK citizenship curriculum and is one of the largest providers of legal education for 5-18 year olds.
The Bar Mock Trial competition is for young people aged 16-18 to gain insight into the world of law by preparing legal arguments using specially written criminal cases. The role of the mentor would be to support teams prepare legal arguments using their experience and knowledge of law. Mentors will be provided guides and resources to support them during this process as well.
Team mentors directly support young people in the lead up to their heat. This includes mentoring school teams on their advocacy style, helping to structure examinations in chief and assisting students to unpick criminal cases.
This volunteering opportunity is best suited for any legal professional (including barristers, solicitors and judges). You will be given guides as well to support you in your role as a team mentor.
Time commitment: This role requires a minimum commitment of one session held virtually or in-person with an allocated school. Volunteers are welcome to schedule more sessions based on their availability.
