In this story, Adam Al-Attar KC reflects on how a simple recommendation from a senior colleague led to a rewarding journey volunteering with Advocate. From reviewing the merits of cases seeking help through Advocate to taking them on, he highlights how pro bono work not only sharpens legal skills but broadens professional exposure - especially for commercial practitioners.

I first came across Advocate because a leader in chambers put me in touch when I was a junior.  He had enjoyed the work as a reviewer and explained that it was an interesting and meaningful way to contribute. Reviewing involves reviewing the case papers and either recommending that a case be taken on or explaining why Advocate’s resources and a pro barrister should not be offered.

Being a reviewer is both intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding.  This is largely due to the breadth of cases a reviewer receives, even within a specific practice area.  It is fun to express a view on the merits of a case and to consider how another barrister might effectively take the case forward.

As for attaining silk, pro bono work is definitely a factor in the matrix.  For commercial practitioners in particular, pro bono is an opportunity to evidence excellence in diversity, as the range of circumstances and cases encountered through pro bono work is often much broader than those seen through paid clients.

I would highly recommend volunteering through Advocate - whether as a reviewer or by taking on cases.  You can also volunteer through one of their partner schemes such as the Chancery and Litigant in Person Support Scheme (CLIPS for short). CLIPS provides “on the day” advice and representation for litigants in person in the Interim Applications Court of the Business and Property Courts, and all barristers with post-pupillage chancery experience can volunteer. These opportunities provide not only a meaningful way to contribute to access to justice, but also a professionally rewarding experience – a day out of the office that serves a higher purpose.  There is everything right in fulfilling multiple goals through a single action.
