Advocate would like to extend our congratulations to the new barristers appointed King’s Counsel on 24th January 2025.

Last Friday, 105 new barristers were appointed Silk by the Ministry of Justice and King’s Counsel Appointments (KCA).

Our Chairman, Sharif A. Shivji KC, commented:

Many congratulations to all those appointed KCs in 2025. Many of those barristers have been long-standing pro bono advocates and supporters of our work. We are delighted to see their achievements recognised. It is also worth remembering for prospective applicants that pro bono work can provide valuable material for completing the KC application form and establishing that the key competencies have been satisfied.”

We know from many KCs that volunteer with us that pro bono work has been useful in their KC applications as it is regularly used to demonstrate the competencies that are assessed, such as leadership skills, the ability to become familiar with new areas of law and addressing the needs of people from a diverse range of backgrounds.

You can read more about how pro bono work has helped some of our Silk volunteers including in their in applications in the KC competition on our stories from the Bar page, such as Michael Jones KC’s story.

If you are looking to apply for Silk in future, read our guide on how pro bono work can assist with KC applications here. Find out more about taking on pro bono work through Advocate and sign up to join our panel of volunteers today.

Our many congratulations again to all the new KCs.
